Hello to everyone visiting my site. I am Ms. Farmer-Harvin, founder and owner GiftedApples Reading. I have owned a tutoring business since1991, tutoring students reading each evening and on Saturdays, while teaching 7-12 grade English and reading students as a full-time certified teacher. Many years ago, I became a licensed PK-12 Reading and Literacy Specialist, with an Orton-Gillingham Structured Literacy endorsement. Receiving a B.A. in Communication Science as a Speech and Language (SLP) educator has given me the skill to provide instruction to students who also have articulation or speech disorders as well as a reading disability. Many students have more than one learning disorder which may interfere with the success of their achievement.
As licensed school principal, I will work along with your child’s with classroom teacher, intervention specialist and other providers, in support of the student’s total education.
Current Homeschool parents or parents who are still considering this option for their child, please feel free to email: ljfarmer.lf@gmail.com or 1.440.825.1920 ~ 1.216.820.3800. GiftedApples Reading provides direct, classroom Homeschool education and literacy-based consulting to parents seeking to homeschool [their] child/ren.
My passion is teaching children and adults with reading disorders such as dyslexia, how to read. Children and adults who do not have a diagnosed reading disorder, but find reading difficult, feel overwhelmed when given reading assignments, or read very little due to their difficulty, will learn to read fluently.
Dyscalculia is also termed ‘Dyslexia of Math’ due to the difficulties the students have with concept of the visual math symbol and its numerical value. Children and adults who acknowledge they have anxiety or fear with maths so significantly they are unable to learn the number system, may have a form of dyscalculia (i.e., difficulty understanding the base-ten count system and concepts of numbers to solve maths). GiftedApples Reading also provides intervention and instruction to students with Specific Learning Impairments, SLI; Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADD/ADHD; Traumatic Brain Injury; dysgraphia, speech, language and articulation disorders. I Student can receive tutoring and intervention in all phases of the writing process as well as 21st computer literacy applications.
Whether students are receiving interventions or instructional tutoring, they will receive the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Structured Literacy method of instruction. Structured Literacy, is a researched- based approach to teaching reading and writing that emphasizes, systematic, explicit and cumulative instruction in the foundational components of literacy. A hallmark of the Orton-Gillingham Approach is that instruction be delivered in a multisensory manner so that the student is using all sensory-modalities (i.e., visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile), or as many possible, simultaneously for maximum experiences within their working memory. This method is especially important for students with dyslexia, dyscalculia and other language processing disorders.
As a former teacher, I am passionate about helping students succeed in their learning for any subject as all courses require reading. I will support students with their class work, with your [parental] permission, to communicate with her/his teacher relative to homework and upcoming tests/quizzes. Parents can feel comfortable asking me to support them as they try to navigate the educational career of their child. Parents with a child who has struggled to learn over a period of time, can feel comfortable is seeking my support and understanding the special education process. I have and will continue to attend Individual Education Plan-ETR or 504 meetings if invited by the parents or school psychologist.
I look forward to speaking with you about your child or any member of your family, and how I may help or referring you to licensed services that will meet your needs. Please feel free to reach out to me through email at ljfarmer.lf@gmail.com or 1.440.825.1920 ~ 1.216.820.3800; with any questions you may have about tutoring, learning, grades and test scores.
